A supermarket in Saint-Jean-du-Falga, France, named E. Leclerc has affixed about 30,000 electronic shelf labels, which can quickly change the price of goods, saving labor and improving work efficiency. Electronic shelf labels are provided by Altierre.
In March of this year, the Saint-Jean-du-Falga supermarket installed the Electronic Shelf Labeling System (ESL), which uses RFID technology to manage commodity prices. After the system is put into use, the price of the item can be automatically updated.
The supermarket's RFID tags, readers, data processing software and system integration services are all provided by Altierre, a technology company based in San Jose, Calif. The data processing software associates Altierre's main server with the back office management system of the supermarket.
Supermarkets often hold promotions, and commodity prices change more frequently. Manually changing prices is time-consuming and laborious. Supermarket management departments are always looking for convenient solutions. Some products need to be stored in a low temperature environment, and supermarkets need a solution that can use active tags at -20 degrees Celsius.
The solution includes a 2.4GHz RFID tag (provided by Altierre, using an air interface protocol) that interfaces with an electronic display. Altierre also offers two access points to collect all tag data in the store.
The active tag chip stores not only product information such as tag code, price, and category, but also some animations and texts. In addition, the tag includes an internal clock that stores the price that will change over time, primarily during power outages.
Association of merchandise with shelf labels: The barcode of the merchandise is scanned using a handheld device and the barcode of the electronic shelf label (which is associated with the RFID code of the shelf label) and sent to the back-end management system of the supermarket via a WiFi connection. The supermarket management department formulates a price change plan in the management system, and sends the price information to the access point through the wired network, and the access point sends the tag information to the shelf label. The shelf label receives the price information from the access point and displays it on the LCD screen, while sending an acknowledgement signal to the access point indicating that the tag has received the message. If no response signal is returned, the access point will send a warning of the label corruption or loss to the background management system to supervise the label and ensure the system is running normally.
In addition, the system has the function of recalling goods. The tag is associated with the item's inventory unit (SKU), and the corresponding recall prompt is displayed on the LCD screen of the expired item for the staff to perform the removal process.
