There are rich and diverse biological self-organizing systems in nature, which show a high degree of group wisdom and can solve complex problems that individuals cannot. For example, the ant colony of division of labor can build complex and delicate nests, carry overweight prey, and prey on predatory squid groups can easily capture very alert copepods and so on.
Inspired by this, Professor Xie Hui's team developed a magnetic micro-roaming robot. This peanut-shaped magnetic swimming robot is 3 microns long and 2 microns in diameter, only about one-fortyth of the diameter of the hair.
The robot can work in tens of thousands of teams, and the robots communicate with each other through a very small force, self-organizing into a multi-modal group, just like the ant colony uses tactile or odor communication.
Since the robot is small enough, it can reach areas such as the end of the capillary, the retina, and the like that are difficult to treat directly. In the future, through in vivo motion navigation, a group of thousands of drug-loading micro-swimming robots can directly reach the lesion site, identify and attack diseased cells, and achieve high-efficiency and no side-effect treatment.
At the same time, micro-nano swimming robots can remain in the body to achieve in-vitro monitoring of health conditions, assisting the human immune system to effectively maintain human health for a long time, and provide a new means for early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. :
