Scientists want to construct solar cells in the form of paintings to generate electricity on the surfaces of any device coated with "battery paints," but efficiency has always been a problem. Researchers could only get a 1% conversion rate a few years ago. Although the method seems feasible.
A research team at the University of Sheffield recently developed a new type of spray-on battery that is cheap and has greatly improved conversion capabilities. The crucible is coated with a layer of perovskite, which is as cheap as the organic solar cell but capable of absorbing most of the light and silicon.
This technology is not yet ready in the lab. The new solar cell efficiency is about 11%. It is still too early to launch the market, but scientists believe that their method can expand the same manufacturing technology used for automotive paint spraying.
